The Perfect Waffle
My roommate’s eyes widened as the brilliant idea came to her mind as we stood in the kitchen. “I have THE best idea! You know what we should do Cara???”
Okay pause right here; allow me to first interject a little backgroud knowledge.
I am learning that anytime my roommate uses the word “we” while we are either in the kitchen or simply talking about food, she actually means “you”; me, Cara. So let me translate: As my roommate and I were standing in the kitchen she turned to me and said, “You know what you should do tomorrow, Cara?”
“You should totally make waffles for breakfast!”
Translation: “I’m going to need breakfast tomorrow and I personally don’t want to make anything, so I think I could really go for one of your waffles in the morning!”
Thanks to my roommate’s encouragement, I ended up making one of the best batches of my ultimate breakfast food. But pride comes before the fall because as I sat at the table this morning, ruminating for 20 minutes over the fact that these were seriously the best gluten-free and vegan waffles I have ever made (quite possibly in the history of mankind as well), I realized that I had left one of the waffles sitting in the iron for that entire time. It gave a very new meaning to extra crispy.
Just because you can throw down a mean breakfast doesn’t mean that you should burn your house down because of it. The end.

WAHOOOOOOO!!! We ate waffles as a family for the first time in months! THANK YOU! This recipe is amazing, it came out just like I remember waffles tasting like. I even had to modify, subbing cornstarch for the arrowroot powder (I couldn’t find it last night at the store) and I learned we had to cook them longer than traditional waffles so they didnt stick in our iron. What a blessing this morning has been!
OMG…. I will tell you, I have tried several gf, ef, recipes before, all the others were so thick I could not pour them in. This one looks just like a regular batter would, hands down the best one we have tried! Thanks a million! Both my 5 year old son and me have various allergies, it is soooo hard to find a great one, Thanks again 🙂
This just made me do a little leap of joy for you! HOORAY! xoxo
Oh my gosh and I am SO hungry right now. Lucky enough, a friend brought me 2 huge bags of fresh blueberries I just popped in the freezer…..Mmmmmmm!!
Yum! We made these last night and then I had to link you on my website! I wrote up a little post about the perfect waffles – then sent them to your site for the recipe. Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow! Those waffles look delicious.. I love crispy waffles. I love all waffles.
Sounds like you both need each other! 😉
And the fact that you sat down and enjoyed your creation fully, enough to forget a burning waffle is proof they were really THAT good! 😉
Yum!
That was beautifully put, Ella. You are right. We do need each other–thanks for putting that into perspective!
You have a very smart roomie! These Waffles looks amazing, Justin has to remind me not to leave any cooking device unattended I have been known to burn a few things (thankfully just not the kitchen)in my day 🙂 The worst cooking on the grille, I get distracted by my flowers and garden and completely forget what I was grilling in the first place
This is why I like you 🙂
Ha, your roommate sounds a bit like my husband & your waffles look perfect.
Both of them are probably rather pleased with themselves and their cleverness, huh? 🙂
The next time you make these, I’m going to be on the next plane to CA
Don’t you tease me! Because I will be making them tomorrow…
Oh, NOW I sign in and see your response! You’ll just have to make them again 😉
These look totally perfect! I’m drooling over all the figs- I need to get me some! And your roommate is pretty clever. I like her already! 🙂
Figs are seriously the best, aren’t they???
Well, at least you didn’t burn the ones you ate 🙂 For that I suspect you and your room mate are grateful!
Good, good point! xo
You always seem to save me every time my mouth goes “hmm, I feel like…(insert said dessert/baked good/breakfast food/meal here.” Then Cara goes, “I will come up with an allergy free and better tasting (insert said dessert/baked good/breakfast food/meal here.” It’s a beautiful cycle…
Great minds think alike, right? 😉
I’m so jealous that your roommate has such an awesome roommate. Love and miss you!! Catch me up, will ya?! I have pictures for you!!!
I would love to add an extra 3 roomies (2 of which are furry little babies). Know of any takers???
OoO, OoO, OoO. PICK ME!! PICK ME!! ((bounces up and down in seat))
I chooooooossssseeeeeeee….
MEG!
My husband was the same way “we” was “you” until I went apesh!t on him one day. Now, he wears padding before he asks me to do things…
HAHA! I could never imagine you going apesh!t on anyone, Brooke. But the mere thought of it is making me giggle…
It was a rare and unusual moment… =)
You are awesome and love the new tag line. You must fly over for tea and catch me up on your life. It sounds like a ton has happened since we’ve talked. Or just im me when you see me ; )
Private jet has been notified 🙂
An IM chat is in the near future, me thinks… xo
I truly think I love your roommate Cara. She’s brilliant! 🙂
Don’t you dare encourage her, Shira…
Sorry! I promise I won’t —- but look at what came of it? These most spectacular waffles!! I see a pattern maybe? 😉
Another good point is made by the beautiful Shira… 😉
Haha! 😉 I might need to know more about this someday..I like what I see so far! Hope you are well!!! xoxox
I can see the headlines now – “Princess Fork, Queen of the Universe Enjoys Ultimate Waffle as House Burns. Story at 7:00.” I can see I’ve made a tragic mistake. Had I moved to California rather than Texas I could have been the persuasive roommate with the personal chef. Darn. Where DID I leave that time machine?
You better find that damn time machine stat, Laurel! Or better yet, we will just make an extra room for you by next week 🙂
Lilac or lavendar?
Haha I can totally relate to your relationship with your roommate- mine used to tell me we should make cookies all the time. Well, we all know only one person ended up in the kitchen and it sure wasn’t her 😉
I love waffles, I wish I had a waffle iron so I could try these!
Gabby, it should be illegal that you don’t have a waffle iron! Looks like I know what I am sending you for your birthday… 🙂
Well, if that’s the traditional birthday present… I need a laughing hyena icon.
so glad to hear that before the waffle char came some perfect waffle. and yes, I’m going to second (the genius) Richa … an adult beverage waffle is a must.
Maybe a combo of your homemade Baileys and my waffle?? 😉
i like my waffles super crisp please:)) are we going to see some adult beverages made into the best possible gf waffles soon 😉
I vote for Black Russian waffles, Richa. Great idea. We should make Cara hand deliver.
Not sure if you want them 20 minutes super crisp, Richa 🙂 ha. Adult waffles, eh? Hmmmm, the possibilities are stirring in my brain right now…
those possibilities i bet are endlessss.. :)) my puppy sends you a hug!
You should totally make her make waffles… she probably wouldn’t burn them…
Take it easy, birthday boy!
Dude, your room mate needs to be making you waffles! I was going to start name calling, but she’s probably a very nice person. Sorry about the crispy one, glad you didn’t burn your house down! Xoxo!
My roommate is a very smart negotiator really. Can’t fault her one bit 😉 If you were here, I’d make you all the waffles your heart could contain!
That’s a heck of a lot of waffles…. Promise?!
Hehe 🙂 glad the new roommate situation is going well. Wafs look delicious!
Everything is going spectacularly! It will be even better come 2 weeks from now…
Mmmmmm these look amazing! And a little char never hurt anyone 🙂
And your relationship with your roommate and the kitchen sounds oh so very similar to my relationship with my husband and our kitchen. “We” always = “you”
I heard char puts hair on your chest 🙂
That sounds like something my grandpa would say! 😉
